We at the Young and Catholic Abuja Branch, had a wonderful weekend as we were hosted by His Eminence, Cardinal John Onaiyekan of Abuja on Saturday 20th May 2017. We continued watching Symbolon, the second part which focusses on ‘Living The Faith’. Episode 6 which is about ‘A CATHOLIC MORAL VISION’.
We talked about morality and how society today doesn’t accept that there is an absolute standard for right and wrong. Instead, much of what the world believes is based on moral relativism: the idea that there isn’t really right or wrong, truth or falsehood—all that matters is what you think and feel is right. Any moral law that applies to everyone is viewed as a restriction of your freedom. This stands in stark contrast to Catholic teaching, which says that living a moral life according to the guidance God has given us is the key to true happiness and freedom. According to Catholic thought, morality is the map that helps us build a life that allows us to become all that God has created us to be. Rather than being restrictive, morality liberates us from sin and enslavement to our own selfish desires.
Cardinal John Onaiyekan made us laugh and really think about the faith and how Jesus wants us to be in this world to “Go, make disciples of all the nations……” Mt28:19. He also gave us a free copy of his book – “Theology in Context”. We are grateful for his time and it was indeed a pleasure spending time with him! Heres what Fr Emmanuel Ojeifo a priest of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja had to say about the session.
Young and Catholic,
Today, I had the pleasure of hosting the members of YOUNG & CATHOLIC, a faith formation group of young Catholic professionals who are passionate about the faith and about growth in the Catholic moral, sacramental and spiritual life. We had a very interesting discussion on the content and vision of Catholic morality. We were blessed to have His Eminence, Cardinal John Onaiyekan join us for the group discussion. He presence brought life, vigor and enthusiasm to the discussion. He explained the breadth and depth of Catholic moral teachings and the content of objective truths as taught by the Church. He also responded to touchy questions on contentious Catholic moral teachings regarding marriage, contraception, abortion, IVF, homosexuality and the likes. At the end of the discussion, the Cardinal presented an autographed copy of his recent book, Theology in Context, to each member of the group. We had a group photograph with him and he blessed us. It was a grace-filled moment for each of us. I feel really proud of the Catholic Church. I am happy that I am a Catholic. I am happy that I am a priest. I am happy that I can help young people find God.
